Autumn Color

I visited a number of locations this autumn looking for the perfect time and place for some vibrant fall color. The best trip I had was this past Sunday while hiking along Mill Lake at Waterloo State Recreation Area near Chelsea, Michigan. This spot hosted a wide variety of trees exhibiting the entire palette of fall colors.

First up was this sassafras (Sassafras albidum, Lauraceae):

Then I came across a couple of different oaks (Quercus spp., Fagaceae):

This late in the season most sugar maples (Acer saccharum, Aceraceae) had lost their beautiful leaves in the wind, but some younger trees were still hanging on:

The red maples (Acer rubrum, Aceraceae) couldn’t hold out, having dropped their leaves to the ground:

I also found some bigtooth aspen (Populus grandidentata, Salicaceae) leaves on the ground:

Looking up I saw that the trees were still hanging on to most of their foliage. The silvery bark and bright yellow leaves were striking against the clear blue sky:

On my way out I grabbed a couple more serene shots:
